About values and virtues

Virtues

People always talk about values and virtues. Often mistaking them as the same or by putting them into the same bag.

Are they the same? Is it like putting a white egg and a pink egg together… but that, in the end, both are eggs? Or rather, a chicken and an egg together… but without knowing which came first? Or a chicken and a duck… not the same, but, somehow, similar?

What do you think?

Culturally speaking, a society may ‘value’, to the upmost, the care for the elderly parents. Another society may ‘value’, above all, the freedom of its members; another one, the faith in God that all should profess; another, the education of its people.

Are those virtues too?

Culturally speaking, an individual may ‘value’ friendship. Another individual may value the care for the sick; another one the closeness to God; another, the harmony within the family. Or perhaps “having fun” with friends.

Are those virtues too?

How about the generally-recognized virtues? Virtues like generosity, humility, honesty, patience, prudence, obedience, respect for others, or being helpful and considerate to others? Or, at the academic or professional life, virtues like motivating others, working productively in teams, being punctual to your school or work appointment, or just listening attentively to your teacher or interlocutor? Can a society, or an individual in that society, ‘value’ those virtues?

One thing is for sure. We all need to develop the virtues and grow on them to live up to our values, in a firm, incorruptible, solid, and true way.

Grow on virtues!
