We are small

Virtues

We think we are big and powerful. We are conquerors, mighty beings. Man, generally speaking, feel this way. And with plenty of reasons. Man has reached the moon. Man has transplanted hearts. Man has discovered electrical, thermal, and nuclear energy; and like that, man has, indeed, achieved many milestones.

Undoubtedly, so many achievements have made man very proud. But, sadly, we have let our pride cross the line, allowing it to come to our heads. That is why we feel big and powerful. We feel we can do everything by ourselves, and that no help for anything and from anybody is needed… Until suffering comes, of course. And when there is suffering, no one will feel big and powerful anymore. We will feel, rather, the opposite.

Yes, man went to the moon. But the reality is that we live in a super tiny dot floating in a universe that contains trillions of galaxies. We are really small. We are so small that we are struggling to fight a micro organism of only 0.000125 milimeters in size that is putting a lot of people in mechanical respirators or in coffins.

While we continue being proud, we will not put our attention to the “small” things and details, simply because those are considered to be unimportant and insignificant, missing out what those can teach us and which can really make us big. While we continue being proud, all the arrogance, superiority feelings, abuse of power, and selfishness will continue sprouting, making humanity to be divided, with the logical consequence of us becoming even smaller.

It really seems that we all forget that we all came to life the same way: naked, from a womb of woman; and we will all die the same way, with nothing on us, because no matter how many diplomas and degrees we obtained, how high the title we got within a company was, or how much money we made while on earth, we can’t take them.

The reality is that we are neither that big nor powerful. Only God is the one and only truly big and powerful.

So, we better stop “feeling” big, and rather start GROWING big. How can we start? Well, with humility. We must humble ourselves to recognize that we lack of kindness and mercy to offer to our enemies; we lack of acceptance and patience to those that think differently; we lack of thoughtfulness and cooperation to our neighbours. And above all, we lack of love for God, for ourselves, and for one another.

Once we develop and practice all these virtues, we will certainly become big and powerful, and then, only then, we will be able to overcome any obstacle on the road.

Are we ready to start growing?
